What Are Kidney Stones

A kidney stone is a solid piece of material that forms in a kidney when there are high levels of certain substances in the urine. The medical name for stones in the kidneys is nephrolithiasis. At the same time, your urine may lack substances that keep crystals from sticking together, creating an ideal environment for kidney stones to form. The stone usually causes little problem until it falls into the ureter, the tube that drains the kidney into the bladder, and causes an obstruction, preventing urine from draining out of the kidney and often causing severe pain.
