Various strains of the human papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually transmitted infection, lead to causing most cases of cervical cancer. Most women have no signs or symptoms of a precancer or initial phase cervical cancer. Symptoms usually do not appear until the cancer has spread to other tissues and organs.
